Installing a carpet can provide so much more for a space than just comfort and luxury – a carpet can be used as a safety feature in slippery areas, add acoustic benefits and even provide increased energy efficiency.
Choosing the right carpet for your needs and having it correctly installed and maintained will help keep carpets looking great for many years. We look at some tips for choosing the right carpet.
Don’t skimp on the underlay.
Carpeting relies on a padded layer of underlay for support and strength; while you won’t see the underlay, you will notice the extra wear and tear on your new carpet if you don’t pick the correct padding.
Consider your options
Carpeting comes in various styles, so it is essential to understand which will suit your needs. The look and feel of a carpet is based on the type of fibres that are used during its manufacture.
Different types of fibres have various benefits.
– Nylon is very soft and durable and is resistant to stains and abrasions, making it the most popular choice of carpet fibre. It has good resistance to wear and holds its colour well. It is the most durable of all the synthetic fibres.
– Wool is a natural, long-lasting material and is the softest of all carpet fibres. Wool is more susceptible to staining, and high-grade wool can be expensive. Pure wool carpets are made with no chemicals or additives, which makes them an excellent choice for those with allergies to chemicals.
– Polyester is the winner in its ability to hold vibrant, fade-resistant colour, and because it is man-made, this fibre is also more hypoallergenic than some others. Polyester/PET can also be made from recycled materials, making it eco-friendly. Polyester is prone to flatten in high-traffic areas.
– Polypropylene fibres are often used as a synthetic wool substitute because of their similarity to natural wool. While this fibre is stain resistant, it is prone to holding on to oils that can collect dirt – but it is relatively easy to clean.
Choose your carpet provider carefully.

The quality of a carpet’s installation is just as important as the quality of the carpet itself. A lousy carpet installation can leave you with lumps and bumps and noticeable ugly seams, do your research and make sure to read the reviews from previous customers.
